Hundreds of thousands of people have signed an online petition to raise funds for Denmark to buy California, apparently in response to US President Donald Trump’s proposal to buy Greenland , CNN reported .
The proponents of the idea call it “Denmarkification,” and they describe it as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to realize a dream that would add some ideal conditions to the overall picture of Denmark.
The idea’s authors explain that California is a warm land with 300 sunny days a year, which could help Danes avoid having to wear boots so often because of the Danish rain.
The group also aims to control Silicon Valley in California, forming a “ tech brood ” friendly to Denmark and allied countries.
The idea also mentions that California currently accounts for 90% of the entire US avocado production. Therefore, if Denmark bought California, people would “never run out of avocado toast” – a famous dish in this country.
The authors suggest that President Trump might consider selling California and offer to give away cakes – a globally famous Danish treat – if Denmark makes a deal to buy California.
The authors’ plan is to raise $1 trillion, enlisting Denmark’s “best negotiators” like the Lego executive team or the cast of “Borgen” – a fictional series about a talented woman who succeeds in becoming Denmark’s first female prime minister.
The authors propose that after the transfer , California could be renamed “New Denmark.” The new administration would open bike lanes in Beverly Hills and spread smorrebrod—the Danish national bread—to every street corner.
In addition, the group of authors also proposed the idea of renaming Disneyland amusement park (Anaheim, California) to “Hans Christian Andersenland”, after the great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen – famous for his children’s stories .
The group of authors hopes to collect 500,000 signatures of support. Less than 3 days after this petition was launched, until 7:00 am on February 13 (Vietnam time), about 232,000 people have signed this petition.
These ideas are a rip-off of President Trump’s proposal for the US to buy Greenland for national security reasons.
Buying Greenland is not a new idea in the US, but it has been strongly promoted by Mr. Trump since he was elected to a second term as US president.
After Mr. Trump raised the proposal to buy Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that Greenland must make its own decision about its independence.
Denmark has actively lobbied and received support from allied countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) to jointly deal with the proposal to buy Greenland.
Greenland’s leader Mute Egede said he is looking to strengthen defense and mining ties with the US after Mr Trump wanted to buy Greenland.
