The Golden State Warriors have been the premiere team in the NBA over the last decade, winning four titles during that time period. Golden State used strong drafting to build the team’s core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.
Thompson just left the Warriors earlier this offseason, but both Curry and Green remain. Green re-signed with the Warriors on a four-year deal last offseason, and Curry has two years remaining on his current deal, including this coming season.
But with Thompson leaving, it has opened the potential idea of the group fully disbanding. Golden State will do whatever it takes to keep Curry around but they could elect to move Green at some point. While he has been the anchor to the culture and defense of the team, he doesn’t bring the same offensive game that he used to. It’s unlikely that the team will move on from him but anything is possible.
Green sparked some conversation during the ESPYs when he was asked what NBA player he would love to play alongside. His answer came as no surprise, but he answered by shouting out Los Angeles Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James.
Green and James have been friends for years, even after all the battles that the two players have gone through playing against one another in the NBA Finals.
It’s a mutual respect aspect between the two men and the idea of them playing together is interesting. James is approaching his retirement sometime in the next few years, so if the two were to ever play together, the clock is ticking.
There was some small talk about Green heading to the Lakers last offseason before he decided to stay with the Warriors. For the two sides to come together, James would need to force his way to Golden State, which is unlikely since he just re-signed with the Lakers. Alternately, Green would need to ask out of the Warriors to head to Los Angeles. But like James, Green just signed a brand new contract last summer. While the pairing would be fun to watch, especially due to the competitive nature of both players, it’s pretty much a fever dream at this point.
However, with James, nothing is out of reach. While he likely stays with the Purple and Gold for his final years, the idea of pairing up with Green and Curry for his final season may be interesting to him. It would give the four-time All-Star a chance to go for another NBA title and James has spoken about wanting to play with Curry. In fact, the two are playing together for Team USA this summer, with James posting about the duo on social media. James heading to the Warriors would be a dream for many NBA fans, but for now, it’s all hearsay.
