Selena Gomez has become an inspiration to so many fans when it comes to her incredibly honest and often empowering quotes about her body image and weight fluctuations.
Her most recent reflection came in January 2024. The “Single Soon” singer shared a throwback Instagram Stories photo wearing a bikini in 2013, writing next to it, “Today, I realized I will never look like this again.”
SELF CARE
Selena reminded fans that she takes medication that causes her to “hold lot of water weight” in a February 2023 TikTok Live. “That happens very normally, and then when I’m off of it I tend to kind of lose weight,” she explained.
“We have days where maybe we feel like s–t but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself and my medications are important and I believe they are what helps me,” the Only Murder in the Building star continued, adding, “So, yeah, not a model, never will be. And I think they’re awesome, mind you, I just, I’m definitely not that.”
HOLIDAY EATING
After getting trolled for how she looked in her gown at the January 2023 Golden Globes, Selena admitted, “I’m a little big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” during an Instagram Live session. She turned to little sister Gracie Teefey and sweetly added, “But we don’t care,” as the two laughed.
ON PUBLIC PRESSURE
“Being in the public eye from such an early age certainly comes with a lot of pressure. It’s hard to feel comfortable when you feel like everyone is watching, judging and commenting on the way you look,” the “Love On” songstress told Glamour UK in December 2022. “Self-confidence is still something I work on daily, but when I stopped trying to conform to society’s unrealistic standards of beauty, my perspective entirely shifted.”
EATING WHAT SHE WANTS
“So, I be trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack in the Box and I got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich,” Selena told fans in an April 2022 TikTok video.
“But honestly, I don’t care about my weight because people bitch about it anyway. ‘You’re too small,’ ‘you’re too big,’ ‘that doesn’t fit.’ ‘Meh meh meh meh,’” she continued before adding, “Bitch, I am perfect the way I am. Moral of the story? Bye.”
HEATH ISSUES
“I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff,” she said in an interview with pal Raquelle Stevens on her video podcast “Giving Back Generation” in November 2019.
The “Lose You to Love Me” singer said that the “combination” of her lupus and the medication she needs alters her weight.
“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life — it depends on even the month, to be honest,” Selena said of her weight changes. “So, for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.”
MORE TO LOVE
After a 2015 trip to Mexico, Selena hit back at trolls who claimed she put on some pounds, writing in an Instagram post, “I love being happy with me y’all,” along with the hashtag, “there’s more to love.”
“The reason why I did that is because I didn’t want [the haters] to win. ‘Cause then, the next day, it wasn’t about how I gained weight. It was about how I embraced it. And that’s just kind of my approach.” the “Wolves” singer told Ryan Seacrest shortly afterward.
CLAPPIBG BACK
“I was getting a lot of hate for my body and ‘you’re gaining weight’ [comment] and so I was in Mexico and I was just feeling all of this stuff and I would be lying to you if I said it didn’t kind of hurt my feelings,” Selena told Extra in 2015 about getting bullied adding there was one positive. “I kind of channeled that into my music.”
