After losing 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund at the Allegiant Stadium to conclude their two-week tour of the United States, Manchester United boarded a plane in Las Vegas and headed home.
While United’s 1-3-2 record may not have been ideal, coach Erik ten Hag and his team nonetheless benefited greatly from the experience of facing elite competition and preparing at a high level for two weeks.
United defeated Arsenal by a score of 2-0 in New Jersey before losing to Wrexham by a score of 3-1 in San Diego and then losing to Real Madrid by a score of 2-0 in Houston the following day.
United’s tour concluded with a disappointing 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund, and the team returned home to Manchester to resume preseason training. See how the first team at United fared in the United States.
Andre Onana, goalkeeper United’s new goalkeeper, who joined the team midway through the tour, played only two 45-minute stints each, but demonstrated Ten Hag’s team’s newfound willingness to play out from the back. Also, not shy about yelling at teammates when they fumble.
Tom Heaton has shown why he should be Onana’s backup this season, and he has been excellent, but the 37-year-old goalie is likely to be loaned out.
Wrexham forward Paul Mullin had a ruptured lung after colliding with young goalkeeper Nathan Bishop. acted like an adult and publicly apologized to Mullin, putting the incident behind them.
Defenders
In United’s 3-2 loss to Dortmund, Diogo Dalot scored a spectacular goal with a curling shot from 20 yards out. improved his case to be the starting right back for the upcoming season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a rock in the back, but he’s also gotten better in the аttаck and spent a lot of time in the attacking third. Assisted in a goal that Dortmund scored due to a pass he played that was intercepted.
Raphael Varane: Played well against Arsenal in the tour’s first game, despite only getting 45 minutes of action due to being held out as a precaution for the final game against Dortmund.
After an ιnjury cut short his season last year, United’s warrior Lisandro Martinez has returned to central defense. Hasn’t toned down his brashness; he was warned after an altercation with both Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham.
Harry Maguire: Tour reinforced the fact that the former captain needs to start again in a new field. Didn’t even get to wear the captain’s armband in the loss to Dortmund, as his replacement Bruno Fernandes didn’t even make the starting lineup. Onana gave me Һell for my defenseless performance against Dortmund.
The likelihood of a transfer for Victor Lindelof is low if United is able to unload Maguire, since he will begin the season as the club’s third-choice central defender behind Martinez and Varane. A reliable stand-in.
After a long ιnjury layoff last season, Jonny Evans was signed on a short-term deal for the tour and appeared in two games. He looked rusty. Possibility of remaining for defensive purposes.
Luke Shaw: Played an important role in all three first-team games, but was at fault for Youssoufa Moukoko’s game-winning goal for Dortmund by letting him go ahead of him on a deep run.
Brandon Williams, another United player, faltered in the final tour game, plunging headfirst into a challenge and entirely missing the ball in the buildup to Dortmund’s first goal. Transfer may be permanent or temporary.
Christian Eriksen, a midfielder, appeared sluggish in the first two games of the trip (against Arsenal and Real Madrid), but he looked much better in the third game (against Dortmund). Struggles to secure a roster spot for the upcoming season.
Donny van de Beek scored in the match against Lyon just before the US tour, but he is still recovering from an ιnjury that forced him to miss the second part of last season. He either needs to take out a loan or pack up and relocate somewhere else permanently.
Casemiro: As the tour shown, he needs time to work on his health and go back to his best form before the new season begins. Overall, his passing accuracy was poor, and he clearly needs more game time to reach his full potential.
Ten Hag was most pleased by Mason Mount’s hard ethic off the ball, which he displayed by pressuring his opponents and gaining back control. However, Mason Mount was less effective moving forward. United’s fresh addition is under heavy scrutiny.
Bruno Fernandes, United’s newly designated captain, played with his typical vigor and dedication in the opening game of the tour against Arsenal. Made plays everytime he was on the field and was a tour de force in terms of mentoring the game’s up-and-coming stars.
Scott McTominay was named captain for the final game of the tour against Dortmund, replacing Harry Maguire. Played as expected, and a sale is possible if United receives £40 million for him.
Kobbie Mainoo started the first three games of the US tour, showing that Ten Hag had faith in him, but an ιnjury suffered in the first half versus Real Madrid ended his season early and he had to return home. The 18-year-old’s performance up until that point was noteworthy, so Ten Hag will be praying for a speedy recovery.
Attackers
Although Antony scored a goal in United’s loss to Dortmund, he played a relatively little role for the team. Still leans too heavily on his left foot, and he blew a glaring opportunity with his right against Dortmund.
In United’s season opener against Arsenal, Sancho scored on a tough finish and looked crisp. After that, he’s solid, however he has to work on his final ball. Appears to have recovered from the mentаl and physical issues that forced him to miss three months of the previous season.
After scoring 30 goals last season, forward Marcus Rashford is poised for a breakout year. Against Dortmund, touch was severely lacking, leading to numerous turnovers. There is a lot of pressure on him to repeat his heroics from the previous season, and Ten Hag has already warned him about the need of staying focused.
With his typical swagger and confidence, Alejandro Garnacho took on defenders one-on-one, but his efforts were fruitless. Cautionary decision to sit out the season finale against Dortmund.
Facundo Pellistri: Whenever he played, he posed a threаt in the attacking third with his direct running and speed, but he still looks likely to make a loan move before the window ends.
