WHAT OCCURED? The 31-year-old midfielder, who has mastered the holding role that has grown to be so crucial for both domestic and international teams, may be regarded as a modern-day great in his own right. Casemiro, a five-time Champions League champion from his spectacular time at Real Madrid, assisted in ending United’s six-year trophy drought last season when they won the Carabao Cup. The Samba star has a large following, but he also admits to being a fan. He has three players in particular who he believes are head and shoulders above the others.
WHAT THEY SAID: When asked to pick his best three athletes, Casemiro responded, “Lionel Messi left his impression. You cannot dispute it. There was no way to avoid that; he was always Argentina’s and Barcelona’s rival. But Messi is popular among football fans. It was enjoyable to compete against him. He is a man who doesn’t require explanation. You can’t help but admire him.
The three greatest players of my generation, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar, were present, Casemiro continued. I’ve seen Zinedine Zidane and [the Brazilian] Ronaldo, but these three are without a doubt the finest I’ve ever seen. Thank God I never faced Cristiano in a game! He provided me a lot of victories and titles.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Ronaldo and Casemiro had many trophy-filled years together at Santiago Bernabeu. The pair briefly reconnected at Old Trafford, but Ronaldo sprinted out the door when his contract with the club expired in November 2022.
