Curry was quoted as saying “the game needs him” after Team USA’s win over Canada.
Team USA was dealt a blow on Wednesday, when the organization announced that Kawhi Leonard would not participate in the upcoming Olympics. USA Basketball, in tandem with the Los Angeles Clippers, agreed that it was best for Leonard to hold off from competitive basketball for now. Leonard missed the final playoff games for the Clippers in April with a bothersome knee injury.
Although he told reporters he felt fine physically and did enough to get back into proper basketball shape, it’s clear his NBA team and Team USA didn’t want to risk it. Leonard has since been replaced by Derrick White of the Boston Celtics.
Steph Curry and LeBron James saddened to see Kawhi leave Team USA
Team USA played its first exhibition game on Wednesday night against Canada. After the win, Stephen Curry spoke about Leonard’s absence, not just for the Olympics, but for basketball in general.
I know he wanted to play… Hopefully, for the long term he’s in a good place, because the game needs him. When he’s not out there, you miss an all-time great player. We hope that he’s ready for the season.
Curry wasn’t the only star to speak on the situation. LeBron James got time with the media following the game and was also asked what he thought.
Just like Curry, James was filled with encouragement for Leonard as he goes through a tough moment.
While Team USA will likely be fine without Leonard due to the sheer number of stars they have at their disposal, seeing Leonard healthy and playing is a treat and luxury for everyone. Hopefully, he can get back to full health and stay healthy for a long time.
