Manchester United can use final US tour friendly to find another goalscoring solution
Man United conclude their preseason tour of the United States on Sunday night in Las Vegas against Borussia Dortmund.
Ten Hag’s strongest team
This is United’s sixth preseason match and fourth and final match of their US tour, although it does include the under-21s match in San Diego against Wrexham.
Erik ten Hag will likely start playing his finest team against Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas and in one of the friendlies against Lens at Old Trafford or Athletic Bilbao in Dublin next weekend.
This match could be the first time we see the team that will face Wolves on the opening weekend of the season, although there is a striker concern.
Midfield is where things could potentially come together. The previous day, Bruno Fernandes played on the wing, but he could play inside this time with Mason Mount and Casemiro playing deeper. This triumvirate appears formidable on paper, and they should have an opportunity to find their rhythm against the Bundesliga squad.
Scoring goals
There have been some bright moments for United in preseason, and this team has made evident tactical strides under Ten Hag, but their biggest problem remains scoring goals, as it did last year.
In six preseason contests, they have scored six goals, failing to score against Real Madrid and scoring only twice against Leeds and Arsenal. Worrisomely, they have struggled to create opportunities.
In the final two weeks of preseason, they will be desperate to improve on this, but Ten Hag is doing so without a striker, as Rasmus Hojlund is only scheduled to participate in one friendly.
As a center forward, the 20-year-old is a work in progress and will not guarantee goals. United will need to strengthen its service to the front line and find alternative means of scoring more goals.
Anthony Martial has not yet played this summer due to a hamstring injury, but he could face Dortmund. There could also be another run-out for Jadon Sancho at false nine. In either case, United could benefit from beginning to score goals prior to the start of the season.
Right-back battle
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has had a strong preseason and appears to have surpassed Diogo Dalot in the race to be Manchester United’s starting right back.
In reality, there does not appear to be much difference between them, but Wan-Bissaka has been starting in what appears to be the strongest back four. Dalot has a glimmer of optimism due to the fact that he signed a five-year contract in May, indicating that Ten Hag views him as a long-term option.
Wan-Bissaka’s contract expires in the summer of 2019, and United have yet to exercise their option to extend it or engage in substantial contract renewal discussions. He is the man of the hour, but is he also the man of tomorrow?
Against Dortmund, we may learn more about Dalot’s chances of regaining his position prior to the opening of the Premier League season.
Sabitzer reunion
United’s January transfer window will go down in history as one of the oddest in recent memory, as the club was compelled to settle for low-cost loan deals to fill problem positions.
Marcel Sabitzer contributed with three goals in 18 games and would have played more if not for a season-ending injury. Wout Weghorst’s performance was catastrophic, with only two goals scored.
He was never likely to be a permanent option this summer, given that he is 29 years old and United required a younger midfielder, but a reunion with the Austrian will occur sooner than expected after he completed a transfer from Bayern Munich to Borussia Dortmund, joining the Bundesliga runners-up during their US tour.
Vegas weather
United, having flown in from San Diego on Saturday night, will return to Manchester immediately after the encounter at the Allegiant Stadium (which begins at 6:00 p.m.) on Sunday.
Regarding temperatures, however, the next twenty-four hours will be especially intense. The stadium is relatively new and has air conditioning, but outside temperatures are expected to reach 45 degrees, and non-participants may be required to attend a morning training session.
This week, United has been headquartered in San Diego, where temperatures are nearly 20 degrees cooler, because it is difficult to move around in this humidity.
