In the face of this situation, the police in Kolkata are making efforts to ensure that candidates can reach the examination venue safely to appear for the UGC-NET exam. The Chhatra Samaj claims to be a non-political organisation, but BJP leaders have supported the protest. The Calcutta High Court has rejected a plea to stop the protest, saying that the fundamental right to peaceful protest cannot be curtailed.
Suspect in rape and murder of young female doctor is shocking India
Student organisation Chhatra Samaj has asserted that its “Nabanna Abhijan” protest on August 27 will be peaceful and focused on demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and the arrest of those responsible for the rape-murder of a female intern doctor at RG Kar hospital.
“The claims by the government and police about stopping the protest are baseless. We just want to express our demands peacefully. If we are stopped, we will try to file a complaint with the state secretariat about this shocking incident,” Chhatra Samaj spokesman Sayan Lahiri said at a press conference on August 26.
Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Mr. Sandip Ghosh is involved?
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted searches at the residence of former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh and several other locations in the city. He is accused of being involved in financial irregularities in the two institutions while in office. Initial reports suggest that the CBI has booked Sandip Ghosh and three others under Indian Penal Code Sections 120B (Criminal Conspiracy), Section 420 (Cheating) and sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Meanwhile, the main accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, underwent a lie detector test on August 25 at a Kolkata jail where he is being held. The test is believed to be crucial to determine whether it was a gang rape or a lone suspect. Also on August 25, CBI officials began investigating a corruption case at a state-run medical college and hospital, with the CBI conducting searches at the home of former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and several other locations in the city.
Millions of Indian doctors protested in many places after the rape and murder of a female doctor.
Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi has criticised the West Bengal government for failing to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of women and girls. She said the state has not taken any quick steps to set up special courts to deal with the 48,600 rape and related cases currently pending.
In a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Ms Devi criticised the West Bengal government for not implementing emergency hotlines such as Women’s Hotline (WHL), Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and Child Hotline. She stressed that these services are essential to provide immediate assistance to victims of violence, but the state has not implemented them despite repeated requests from the central government.
Ms. Devi said that this omission has deprived women and children in West Bengal of vital assistance in times of disaster. She also highlighted the incompetence of the local administration in not being able to operate the Emergency Special Courts (FTSCs) as directed by the central government when there are a large number of pending cases of sexual offences in the locality. In her letter dated August 25, the Minister stressed the urgency of implementing strict legal frameworks and judicial processes to ensure the safety and security of women and children in West Bengal.
In connection with the incident, a video recently emerged showing the presence of former principal Sandip Ghosh, his lawyer, police and security personnel at the auditorium where the body of a female intern was allegedly found on August 9. This has raised suspicions that much of the evidence in the case may have been destroyed.
“The video clearly shows that there were many people walking around the alleged crime scene. Why did the police allow these people to enter and exit the hall where the rape and murder took place? It is clear that evidence was destroyed,” said Jagannath Chattopadhyay, BJP West Bengal general secretary.
However, police said: “The area was cordoned off with curtains soon after the body was discovered. No one other than the family was allowed in or out.” A police spokesman said the video depicted individuals outside the secure area. Lawyer Santanu Dey said he was at the school to attend the orthopaedics department and was not involved in any forgery. Meanwhile, Debasish Som, a forensic doctor, and Ghosh are being questioned by the CBI.
The shocking incident in India took place on August 9, when a female intern was brutally raped and murdered in the conference hall of RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The case once again sparked outrage and nationwide protests demanding that the government take measures to ensure workplace safety, especially for women.
