Stephen Curry Champions Black Designers with Rakuten Partnership: ‘Shine Light on Amazing Talent’ (Exclusive)

The NBA pro will reveal the first look from his new collaboration with Rakuten on Oct. 24 during Warriors opening night against the Phoenix Suns

Stephen Curry is teaming up with Rakuten to amplify Black fashion designers during the 2024 NBA season.

Through the partnership Curry, 35, will host conversations with designers who are represented by the Black In Fashion Council. He’ll also wear their looks in tunnel walks to spotlight their brands and champion their journeys. Among the labels Curry is collaborating with are AdvisryDes PierrotHead of StatePierre Blanc and Savant Studios.

Speaking to PEOPLE, the Golden State Warriors point guard says he’s excited to use his platform to elevate the work these designers are doing in the fashion space.

“It’s an awesome way to create representation in a field that needs it,” Curry tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I’m no designer, I’m no fashion mogul, but I know there are creative ways to shine a light on some amazing talent. I’m excited for the world to see these designers on a new stage.”

“Most of the designers I’ve met for the first time. I heard their stories of how they got started in the industry and what inspires them and their brand. I met with Paul Richards, Keith Herron, and Des Pierre in person and saw their excitement on what it means to work on this project together,” Curry continues.

He adds: “You’ll be able to see me wear their looks on the tunnel walks and then you’ll be able to shop their looks through Rakuten’s services.”

Curry will reveal the first look for the partnership – designed by Pierre Blanc – during the tunnel walk on Oct. 24 for the Warriors opening night against the Phoenix Suns.

Starting on Oct. 25 consumers can buy pieces from the look on Rakuten.com, as well as items from each of the designers’ current collections. New pieces from Curry’s looks will be added each month as they are revealed.

“With the platform I have I also have the blessings to extend reach across the world…and find creative ways to elevate people who need support and deserve support, resources and attention,” Curry says.

The four-time NBA champion adds that if he had to describe his game day style in three words he’d use “comfortable, casual and versatile.”

He shares that his favorite look he’s worn for a tunnel walk is two piece wool suit he wore for the Christmas Day game last year. Along with the suit, the outfit was paired with a black turtleneck and black Celine lace-up boots.

“I need to be comfortable traveling and be able to get in and out of where I’m going,” Curry says. “Then I usually wear stuff that I could wear to multiple different events, or venues, or for different reasons.”

Curry’s love a athleisure extends from the court to at home on his couch.

“On a day when I might not be leaving the house I’m going to be super casual and probably rocking some type of hoodie. No matter what the temperature is, you’ll probably see me in a hoodie,” he explains.

He adds: “But then I can dial it up. I have a pretty strong, wide range of stuff that you’ve probably seen me in. It’s fun because I like to get pushed in a lot of different directions from a fashion perspective and it’s evolved over time.”
