A source from Manchester United said Lisandro Martinez could receive a special assignment next season.
Despite signing 18-year-old Leny Yoro from Lille , United are still pursuing a deal for Bayern Munich’s Dutch star Matthijs de Ligt. And they also remain interested in Everton’s Jarred Branthwaite.
With Sweden international Victor Lindelof likely to leave in the transfer window and youngster Willy Kambwala sold for £10m, United are really reshaping their defence. Even World Cup winner Martinez ’s role could change at times.
Martinez is MU’s defensive warrior
If United can reach an agreement with De Ligt, a partnership between the Dutchman and Yoro would be an attractive prospect for the future.
This won’t be a regular occurrence next season, but according to Give Me Sport, if it does happen, Martinez could move into a defensive midfield role alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Martinez is considered suitable for this role because he is quick and adept at tackling as well as having vision for passing the ball forward.
