Mason Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United but now on exile, makes his debut for Getafe as a substitute against Osasuna.

Mason Greenwood, who last played for Manchester United in January 2022, made his professional debut with Getafe off the bench.

The LaLiga match against Osasuna was the 21-year-old’s first since joining the club on loan from Manchester United during the summer transfer window. He entered the game in the 77th minute as a substitute.

United’s decision that he will not play for the club again after criminal allegations against him were dismissed was met with criticism, but the club has stayed by its decision.

He has the backing of the Spanish club’s faithful, many of whom have purchased jerseys with his nаme.

Greenwood won the corner kιck that resulted in the game-winning goal by Nemanja Maksimovic in the 86th minute, giving Getafe a 3-2 victory.

Amad Diallo, Greenwood’s teammate at Manchester United, posted a photo of Greenwood’s substitution with a string of heart emojis to indicate his appreciation for Greenwood’s homecoming.

After much uncertainty over whether he would be reinstated into the first team squad at United, Greenwood signed Getafe on deadline day in September.

Greenwood was picked to the team for the next weekend despite manager Jose Bordalas’ insistence that he would need to wait before making his debut.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Bordalas revealed that Greenwood needs a ‘period of adaptation’ before Sunday’s league encounter against Osasuna.

He remarked, “It’s a big hope, and everyone’s looking forward to meeting him. He has been out of action for over a year and a half due to unemployment, and is currently undergoing the process of readjusting to his new environment and catching up to his teammates.

We need to be careful and gentle with him. When he is ready to compete will become clear as the days go by. Patience is required.

We have seen his potential and are aware of his skill level. I don’t want to comment on specific players, but I will sаy that his teammates are making a big difference for him.

The new players and everyone in the locker room have made him feel right at home, so the saying goes.

Despite criticism for their “tone deaf” social media reaction to Mason’s arrival, Getafe nonetheless put on a spectacular welcoming ceremony and continue to show their support for the 21-year-old on social media.

At his unveiling, Greenwood told the crowd that he was “feeling good” and “happy to be here.” He later reflected on his “amazing first day” on Instagram.

United determined Greenwood would depart the club over the summer after a lengthy inquiry into charges that were ultimately dropped.

Mason, the club, and everyone else concerned are aware of the challenges he faces in trying to resume his career with Manchester United, according to a statement released by the club. Therefore, we have come to the conclusion that it is in everyone’s best interest for him to do so in a location other than Old Trafford, and we will be working with Mason to make that happen.

It’s uncertain where he’ll play after his United deal expires.
