For their Champions League match against Bayern Munich, Erik ten Hag’s struggling team was forced to make do without 12 players, 10 of whom were absent due to injury.
During the period leading up to that match at the Allianz Arena, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat, and Mason Mount all returned to training in some capacity. These players could participate when United resumes the Premier League season on Saturday night at Turf Moor. Prior to the Burnley game, though, selection worries are still growing.
United was reduced to its bare essentials in midweek due to injuries to Tom Heaton, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, and Amad Diallo. As Ten Hag gets ready to do yet another head count for the trip to Burnley, here is our most recent update from the treatment table.
Sofyan Amrabat Unknown injury
September 23 vs Burnley is a potential return date.
According to Ten Hag, “He came back unfortunately with an injury, so he was unavailable [against Brighton], but on the short notice [soon], yes, I’m sure we will all get joy from them [new signings].”
Mason Mount Muscular Injury
September 23 vs Burnley is a potential return date.
Mount has resumed training after missing four games due to a musculoskeletal condition. The England regular, though, wasn’t healthy enough to play at the Allianz Arena.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka Unknown Illness
Date of return: October or November
What United have said: On September 18, the team announced that Wan-Bissaka had sustained an injury during his brief appearance against Brighton. He had been ill as well in the lead-up.
Harry Maguire’s Unknown injury
September 23 vs Burnley is a potential return date.
Following an injury sustained during the final training session prior to their Champions League debut, Maguire did not travel with the 21-man group to Bavaria on Wednesday night.
Muscular injury to Luke Shaw
Date of return: October or November
Ten Hag has stated “We can’t do that” (provide a certain timeline for returnees). These days, it’s personal, thus they’ll be gone for a while.
Tom Heaton (calf), Tyrell Malacia (unspecified), Kobbie Mainoo (ankle), and Amad (knee) are all recovering at Carrington.
